The enthusiastic wildlife explorers.

The KK Wilderness Explorer program, initiated by the Kanniyakumari Forest Department, aims to introduce school students to the rich biodiversity of the Kanniyakumari district. Collaborating as a knowledge partner in this endeavor is the Kanniyakumari Nature Foundation. The program commenced on September 16th with the participation of 33 students and   two school teachers. The students began their journey at the Forest Office and then proceeded to the Kalikesam Eco camp via a forest vehicle.

During their adventure, the students embarked on a trekking trail adjacent to the eco camp. They were captivated by the sights of fascinating creatures such as the Kalidasa lantern bug, Whip scorpion, various bird species, and spiders.

Their enthusiasm for observing these intriguing forest inhabitants was palpable. Leading the trail was Vinod, one of the Directors of the Kanniyakumari Nature Foundation, who shared insights about the significance of old-growth forests. He even encouraged the students to measure the circumference of a large Terminalia bellirica tree using a measuring tape.

Birds and butterflies were shown to the students.

Upon returning to the camp, the students were treated to a hearty breakfast. Subsequently, ACF MR. Vidyathar delivered a talk about the Kanniyakumari Wildlife Sanctuary, while Vinod presented a comprehensive overview of the sanctuary’s biodiversity.
